Hollywood is a city of dreams, but for many, breaking in remains a challenge. From Stage to Screen: Finding His Passion
Wilson’s love for storytelling began in childhood, from performing as the Lion in The Wizard of Oz to balancing baseball and theater. When it came time for college, he chose Howard University, one of the few HBCUs offering a BFA in Acting.
“Howard gave me the foundation to be confident in my craft and understand the importance of representation in this industry,” Wilson shares.
Breaking Into the Industry: EICOP’s Impact
Like many aspiring actors, Wilson faced the challenge of getting his foot in the door. That opportunity came through HBCU IN LA, an initiative by EICOP providing internships and mentorships in entertainment.
“Being part of the inaugural class of HBCU IN LA changed everything. The relationships and opportunities I gained were invaluable,” Wilson recalls.
Through the program, he landed an internship at SAG-AFTRA, learning the business side of entertainment and forging relationships that would later shape his career.
Navigating Challenges: From Setbacks to Success
Wilson’s journey wasn’t without hurdles. Just as he was preparing to start as a production assistant in Los Angeles, COVID-19 hit, putting everything on pause.
“That period was tough—I was ready to make moves, and then suddenly, the industry stopped,” Wilson says.
Despite the setback, he stayed connected with EICOP mentors, and a cold email led to an opportunity at John Wells Productions. “That email changed my life. I took a leap, and it paid off.”
Now, three and a half years later, Wilson works as a TV Coordinator, gaining insight into development and production. “Being on the business side has expanded my perspective. As an actor, you don’t always see what happens behind the scenes. This role has given me that knowledge.”
The Power of Community and Mentorship
Wilson credits much of his success to the connections he built. “EICOP gave me access to a network of people who genuinely want to see me win,” he says. He remains involved as an alumni board member, committed to paying it forward.
“We need more people of color in every part of this industry. When you’re in the room, bring others with you. That’s how real change happens.”
Looking Ahead: Creating His Own Path
While Wilson continues to grow at John Wells Productions, his ultimate goal remains acting. “I want to be in front of the camera, telling stories that matter. But I also want to create opportunities for others like me.” He envisions a future where HBCU alumni are leading studios and shaping Hollywood’s future.
His advice to aspiring students? “Go for it. Apply. Take the chance. You never know where it might lead.”
Final Thoughts: A Legacy in the Making
For Wilson, success is defined by three words: Strength, Intellect, and Perseverance. From Howard University to Hollywood, his journey proves that with access, mentorship, and hard work, anything is possible. As he continues to build his legacy, one thing is certain—Jaylen Wilson is just getting started.
